How Council Tax support is calculated

Council Tax support is calculated on a means-tested assessment. The level you are awarded depends on the amount of your Council Tax liability, your household income, savings, and your household needs. Those with the greatest need will receive the most assistance.

Income groups:

  • Income Support
  • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Universal Credit where the applicant receives the maximum award (and the applicant has no other income apart from disregarded income such as Personal Independence Payments, Disability Living Allowance, Child Benefit, Child Maintenance, or War Pension)
  • New Style Job Seeker's Allowance or New Style Jobseeker's Allowance and Universal Credit (and the applicant has no other income apart from disregarded income such as Personal Independence Payments, Disability Living Allowance, Child Benefit, Child Maintenance, or War Pension)
  • New Style Employment and Support Allowance or New Style Employment and Support Allowance and Universal Credit (and the applicant has no other income apart from disregarded income such as Personal Independence Payments, Disability Living Allowance, Child Benefit, Child Maintenance, or War Pension)

Prior to 1 April 2022, if you were of working age and not in one of the income groups detailed, there was a minimum charge of £3.50 per week applied to your Council Tax Support calculation.

From 1 April 2022, there will be no minimum charge applied to the Council Tax Support calculation for anyone of working age. There is no minimum charge for those of pension age.

Change in circumstance

You must tell us of a change in your circumstances that may affect your Council Tax support award to us. You must do so straight away.

Council Tax support overpayment

An overpayment is when more benefit is awarded than someone is entitled to (this can happen when somebody does not tell us about a change in their circumstances). This includes any Council Tax support which is paid directly to your Council Tax account.

Most overpayments are recoverable, which means you will have to pay the money back.
