Gypsies and travellers

From time to time, Gypsies and Travellers will arrive in the borough. The travelling community leads a mobile lifestyle and sometimes choose to stay temporarily on unauthorised sites.

They will only set up an unauthorised camp on a site where they can easily access the land. The best advice is to ensure that your land is protected by appropriate secure access points, such as locked gates, barriers or bollards.

If the encampment is on council-owned land, we will take appropriate action to move the Travellers on as soon as possible.

If they are on private land the owner will need independent legal advice to take steps to remove the Travellers.

We monitor such sites to make sure the needs of both the Travellers and the residents are being met.
